Rose Crichton started this petition to Maui County Council and

This petition is to move Hanakao’o Beach park (aka. Stone Crushah, Canoe Beach) and Wahikuli Beach Park (aka. Sand Box) into procuring a cultural designation. These two parks have been the gathering place for many in West Maui for the simple fact that these two areas are the only areas that the local community can still go to without having to be bothered by tour operators and tourist.  Almost all of West Maui’s beaches have gone to tourism and commercialization.  Canoe paddling, fishing, diving, netting, first year baby lu’aus, graduation parties, and just plain simple rest has made these two beaches very important to the Westside community.  Without these two place we will have nowhere to go. The over commercialization of our West Maui Beaches has affirmatively directed our West Maui community to dispute the County of Maui’s permitting of commercial operators and businesses at County facilities and Parks on the Westside. The short sidedness and lack of consideration for the West Maui community in keeping some of our Beaches free from over commercialization has eroded to tour operators taking advantage and asserting that their permits give them precedence over and above the recreational uses of the West Maui Community. In the past and up to this very day tensions have been rising and escalating between the local community, the operators and the tourist that frequent these beaches day in and day out.  The local community needs a place that they can enjoy recreationally, physically, culturally and spiritually.  The beaches of West Maui are our retreats from our everyday busy lives by where we can go to refresh and enjoy ourselves along with friends and families. Many of these places of refuge have been inundated with over commercialization with a profuse sum of tour operations catering toward visitors and the tour industry at many if not all of our recreational parks. We are demanding that the County of Maui not just consider,  Ms. Paltin’s request, but give Hanakao’o and Wahikuli parks the Cultural designation that it so deeply needs.
