This morning, September 11th, staff of The Missoula Independent found the doors to their workplace locked. Inside, Matt Gibson former owner and Missoulian general manager met with HR. Staff of the Independent was told they could make an appointment to collect their belongings.

We, the undersigned Missoulians, demand that Matt Gibson and Lee Enterprises respect our community, and our free press. The staff of the Independent expected that Lee would deal in good faith with them. This action constitutes a betrayal not only of  Independent staff, but of the Missoula community.

Our message is simple and clear - this community values the free and independent thinking, writing and reporting of The Independent.
Consequently, we demand that Lee Enterpries and Matt Gibson negotiate with Independent employees in an effort to keep the Indy open. Respect this community's call for independent journalism. Respect the employees of the Independent.
