WHEN WILL LOW-INCOME FAMILIES MATTER? WE DEMAND SHUTTLES TO THE NEW DTA / DHCD OFFICE!!!!!!!!!
WE ARE OUTRAGED!! The Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) and Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA) are merging and moving to Cottage St. in Springfield, MA. This move will make it harder for the residents in our community by forcing them to spend their precious money to get to and from the offices they depend on for services! For this reason, the Arise for Social Justice Homelessness Committee has started this petition to DEMAND that low cost shuttle buses be provided so our community has better access to both the DTA and DHCD. Currently, offices are located in the heart of the community just several minutes away from the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority (PVTA) headquarters at Union Station. Being located in an area where transportation is lacking makes it inaccessible to residents who do not own vehicles and rely on walking and public transportation. Furthermore, the offices now are located close to other local services and organizations that offer resources.
With the new offices relocating to Cottage St., there are a number concerns. Most residents will need to take at least two buses to reach the facility. The office is five miles away from Union Station and on a good day takes 38-42 minutes each way. Buses run every 40 minutes, making it difficult for residents to do the usual, “back and forth” from office to office to obtain and submit documentation to DTA and DHCD before their children get out of school. As an organization whose members personally know the struggles of poverty and single motherhood, we understand the hardship this move will create. There are no sidewalks on Cottage St., making these trips very difficult for mothers pushing strollers and people who are disabled (especially during the winter months). This move puts families at risk of losing their benefits or preventing a family from receiving emergency shelter. Shuttle buses will enable residents to travel to the new office on Cottage Street without stops or interruptions. It will make things more convenient, safe, and less time consuming for residents who need the services these offices provide.
We are tired of low income people being treated unfairly! WE DEMAND A CHANGE!!!! Please support this effort to get shuttle buses for DTA and DHCD applicants/recipients by signing this petition. Your signature along with others can make a difference.
