Amherst Street has long been used by commuters as a pass through to avoid the busy El Cajon Blvd./70th St. intersection. The result has been that too many people travel at unsafe speeds through the 25 mph zone on Amherst St., sometimes in excess of 40 mph. Since May 19th of 2013, there have been no fewer than three accidents; two resulting in hospitalizations and one involving a fatality. To protect the residents of this neighborhood, and the lives of those who drive here every day, the city must do something. They must do something drastic and do it quickly.
