We did it. Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is not coming to New York City because we stood up to him and, as a community, said his bigotry is never welcome here. We refused to give him a microphone to espouse his hateful rhetoric.

Unfortunately, Marriott and Host Hotels are still going through with hosting this event, and President Bolsonaro is still being honored as “Man of the Year,” even if he isn’t showing up. He doesn’t deserve this award or the platform this event creates to celebrate his harmful behavior. I’m disappointed by Marriott and Host Hotels’ decision to keep this event in our city and urge them to reconsider: they still have time to cancel this event.

We need to continue telling Marriott that honoring President Bolsonaro is unbecoming of a company in this city and a member of this community.
