Representatives Neubauer, Snodgrass, and I wanted to follow up with you to share some good news. In conversations with Governor Evers last year, members of the Legislative LGBTQ Caucus requested that the Governor include this bill in his 2021-2023 state budget proposal. On February 16, the Governor presented his state budget proposal to the legislature. His proposal includes a recommendation that state statutes be modified to make references to marriage, spouses and parentage gender-neutral. The Governor’s budget proposal has been introduced as SB 111, and you may read the full bill here.
Now that the budget has been formally introduced by the Governor, it has been referred to the legislature’s Joint Committee on Finance. The Joint Committee on Finance will review and make changes to the budget over the next several months.
I would encourage you to continue to share your support of these provisions in the Governor’s budget proposal – and the support of those who have signed the petition – with the specific state legislators that represent each constituent, as well as with members of the Joint Committee on Finance. The full list of the members who serve on the Joint Committee on Finance is available here.
I hope this information is helpful.
Sincerely,
Mark Spreitzer
