Denounce Milo Yiannopoulos' hate speech as inconsistent with UWM's values

It has come to our attention that the celebrity provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos will be performing on UWM Campus as part of his “Dangerous Faggot Tour” in December. As those who are dedicated to this campus and its diverse community, we would like to better understand how hosting someone who has espoused hateful, abusive, and dangerous rhetoric supports the UWM mission.

At the heart of this mission, UWM declares that we value:

* A caring, compassionate, and collegial community characterized by mutual respect and safety.

* Diversity in all of its definitions, including who we are, how we think, and what we do.

* Ethical behavior, based on integrity, accountability, and responsibility

One of the many reasons we cherish this campus is that these core values are evidenced in every classroom, office, and gathering space. As we walk towards our classrooms, we are energized and invigorated by the diversity nurtured by this mission and it is with pride that we stand in front of our students as representatives of UWM.

When we inform our students that their classroom is a safe space, we are not only emphasizing that “all are welcome.” We are also asking students to welcome and engage struggle with those viewpoints that confront them. More importantly, we ask that these students be forgiving and patient when helping someone understand how language can be misplaced, incorrect, or hurtful.

So we are deeply troubled that the campus that publicly espouses such admirable values in its mission, would host someone who flagrantly defiles them these values.

But what we find most disconcerting, however, is that we are afraid for our students. They question whether or not UWM truly strives to foster a "caring, compassionate, and collegial community" that promotes "ethical behavior based on integrity, accountability, and responsibility."

Furthermore, as those charged with being responsible for the safety and wellbeing of the students, we argue that you have not demonstrated the integrity demanded of a world-class research institution.

As UWM faculty and instructors, we consider the safety of this student body a priority. We request that UWM admin makes it clear that they find the content reprehensible and makes it crystal clear, publicly, that UWM is not endorsing it, sponsoring it, or paying for it.

Otherwise UWM can no longer claim to respect its own mission, its values, or responsibilities to the students.

We hope that you will take the appropriate action by publicly affirming UWM's commitment to diversity, ethical behavior, and a caring, compassionate, and collegial community.

Thank you
