Sunshine Coast Council: Declare a climate emergency

Sunshine Coast Council: Declare a climate emergency

The issue

We are among the lucky people, living in a beautiful environment, with a great lifestyle. I have two sons in their twenties, i have nephews and nieces, and younger friends, having children of their own. Everywhere I go, I see young families. I want them to grow up and live in a world that has a future, a world which we enhance by our actions now, rather than a world made inhospitable by our failure to act.

That's why I am calling on the Sunshine Coast Council to declare a climate emergency.

More than 60 per cent of Australians agree with the sentiment that "Global warming is a serious and pressing problem." Here in Australia, it was Darebin Council in Melbourne which became the first council in the world to recognise the climate emergency in December 2016. Since then, 549 Local Councils around the world have done the same.

We have 12 years to drastically reduce emissions, and increase ways to remove excess greenhouse gasses already in our atmosphere, to prevent our world from warming to the point where continued human life on earth is threatened.

We cannot wait until the next Federal election. We need all action at all levels of government.

Acknowledging the work you, our Sunshine Coast Council, are already doing to address climate change, we call on you to take the next step and join Councils around the world in formally recognising the danger we are facing.

We request that you declare a climate emergency.  This would demonstrate a concrete commitment, a willingness to stand together and fight to prevent the largest threat of our times.

Please, sign and share this petition and send a strong message:

Save us from a climate crisis, before it’s too late. Declare a climate emergency, today.
