***In Loving Memory of Stefano Lucchesi*** Railway Crossing Safety - Tottenham, ON.

On March 1, 2017 a beloved son, brother, boyfriend and friend, Stefano Lucchesi, twenty-four years old, was killed while operating his motor vehicle on his way home from work. Stefano entered the railway crossing at 6th line (Mile 37.18) in Tottenham, Ontario and was struck and killed by a Canadian Pacific train.
It is important to note that the railway crossing at 6th line in Tottenham has been identified as among the 500 highest risk rail crossings in Canada as compiled by Transport Canada. Equally important is the fact that the railway crossing does not have gate arms to provide an additional measure of safety to motorists of pending danger, which could have easily prevented his death.
Action must be taken to safeguard the public against future injuries and/or fatalities at this railway crossing. The grade crossing standards and recommendations of Transport Canada should not be dismissed, as they have been for this crossing.
New Tecumseth has increased in population in the last five years; Many families, children and teens drive and walk through these crossings everyday as well as in the surrounding area. As population increases, as do the odds of more tragedies like our family is facing. Our goal, as Stefano's family and friends is to see railway crossings gate arms installed at 6th Line (Mile 37.18) to help prevent any further accidents and/or fatalities.
