The Issue
Hello Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment,
This petition is the means to an end, the end of losing and the beginning of WINNING the Stanley Cup again! The Toronto Maple Leafs have been a sub par team through my entire life. From 1981 though now, I have never been a hockey player and would never call myself a hockey super fan but the Leafs have been my team even after not qualifying for the playoffs again this year . A regular season win is great but we need to set the bar higher and make a big change and go for the cup! They have not come anywhere close to the Stanley Cup in almost 50 years and every single Leafs fan in existence today needs it to come back home to Toronto. In my 33 years the closest thing to winning the Cup is the faded memory of the 2001-2002 Conference Finals loss to the Hurricanes and that was 13 years ago!
MLSE have overhauled coaches, management, players and even enjoy a new arena in the Air Canada Center. None of this has worked in 50 years,. There is one thing that can definitely help turn things around for the Leafs and help bring the Stanley Cup back to Toronto! Overhaul the team logo by changing the Toronto Maple Leafs official colour to the WINNING colour RED.
When two opponents or teams of equal fitness and skill face off against each other the one wearing red will win more often. An article in National Geographic from 2005 shows that reds win percentage is 53-57% versus blue. The boxing, taekwando, Grecco-Roman wrestling, and freestyle wresting match results at the 2004 Athens Olympics were studied. In 2008, German sports psychologists looked further into the study and showed that Referee bias can also occur in favour of the team wearing red giving an average of 13% more points to red, All things being equal, wearing RED will tip the scales in favour of the Leafs. Another study of experienced players in first person shooter video games showed that the team wearing red won 55% of the time versus the opposing team wearing blue.
Red is also a symbol of dominance and testosterone and can increase the Leafs dominance over any opponent. When male zebra finches had red plastic rings placed on their leg, the birds dominance among other male zebra finches increased. A similar display in humans occurs in sporting events and this type of response to colour was most likely through the evolution of sexual selection in humans. Red uniforms are consistently showing a higher probability of winning and why Red will help the Toronto Maple Leafs assert their dominance in the NHL again especially in the playoffs!
In a study looking at the correlation between "red and performance attainment" it demonstrated that even just seeing red hinders opponents performance by triggering an "avoidance motivation" in a similar way as a stop sign. In theory when a Leafs player is wearing a red jersey the opposing teams players should be slower at getting to them and have a harder time stealing the puck away.
The last time the Toronto Maple Leafs logo had a major change was also the last time they took home the Stanley Cup in 1967. Some minor changes have happened to the logo between 1967 and now but if you completely overhaul the logo with a colour change then I would think those winning ways should also come back! The other major change since 1967 is the total number of NHL teams has jumped from 6 to 30. Any opportunity to gain an advantage over other teams should be taken!
The Toronto Maple Leafs will enjoy more wins, more playoff berths, and the Stanley Cup victory once they change their team colour to the winning colour of RED!
