Alter bus lanes on Fitzsimons Lane, Templestowe during peak hours to reduce traffic congestion

The issue

Fitzsimons Lane in Templestowe, Victoria is a busy, high traffic area, particularly during morning and evening peak times. Recently there has been a $4.18 million bus priority project at Williamsons Road, Porter Street and Fitzsimons Lane in Templestowe undertaken by VicRoads to introduce a new dedicated bus lane. This does nothing to combat the huge volume of traffic that bottle necks through this area daily during peak period, morning & evening, every single day causing frustration to all who regularly use this thoroughfare.

With environmental awareness increasing, I support the move to provide better and more reliable public transport options, including the introduction of bus lanes, to allow commuters who are able to use public transport the ability to reduce their carbon footprint. This is not an option for most commuters on this route however who face congestion in the 2 car lanes when the bus lane sits idle a majority of the time; according to Vic Roads, buses use this route every 5 minutes during peak times.

Congestion in this area is not only frustrating but also dangerous, with accidents a regular occurrence. It’s no surprise given the sudden banking up of traffic in an 80km speed zone. I myself was involved in an accident when, sitting stationary in traffic just outside Westerfolds Park, the car behind me failed to notice the halt in the traffic and hit me at 80km per hour, writing off my car and making this route even more dreaded for me still to this day.

According to Google maps, it should take 2 minutes to travel the 2.4 kilometres from Porter Street in Templestowe to the roundabout at Main Road Eltham without traffic however during peak times, it is not uncommon for travel time for this short expanse of road to blow out to well over 20 minutes; a 900% increase.

By allowing cars to share this lane at peak times (7:30 - 9:30am & 4:30 - 6:30pm for example) would increase the flow through the area by 50%; allowing 3 lanes of traffic through each way rather than the crippling 2 lanes currently available. Surely the slight disadvantage to the minority (bus users) would be worth the vast improvement for the majority (other road users) for 4 hours per day?
