The most obvious benefit from placing metal detectors in our schools is the immediate discovery of weapons. There is data available which shows that schools with these security measures have a lower risk than those without. In the 2012-2013 academic year, the most recent year for which data is available, school officials dealt with 164 reports of weapons on campus, including firearms and knives. The reports accounted for less than 1 percent of all student code of conduct violations. According to data from the school system, officials employ 12 school resource officers. They are tasked with ensuring the safety of the approximately 57,000 students enrolled in XXXX schools. The officers are assigned to between four and 10 schools based on their locations and activity levels. Every year over 3 million young people fall victim of a violent crime.
