Manila in the past was defined by the grandeur of its buildings, its rich culture and history and unforgettable memories of its glory days. The early 20th century brought about the construction of neo-classical and art deco structures as well as other architectural designs that withstood the test of time. With the likes of Daniel Burnham, an urban planner who designed the landscape of Manila and Baguio, and Juan Arellano, an architect par excellance who designed the Metropolitan Theater, Legislative Building (now the National Museum) and the Manila Post Office among others, they lorded over the grand design of Manila and made it the Europe of Far East. Then came World War II and most of these structures have been destoyed. Some have been renovated to approximate its original design but most were irretrievably lost. Those structures which survived the war and the sometimes garish renovations, will be facing the wrecking ball anytime soon. All that will be left of Manila are steel and concrete structures of common designs. It is through this petition that we urge our local government officials and the higher-ups in the Historical Commission to do something to prevent the eventual destruction of these few remaining heritage sites and give back to Manila the soul it lost. The generation after us will be given the chance to actually feel these structures and reminisce the past glory that was Manila and will not remain as just another footnote in history books.
