Dear supporters,
Thank you to everyone for standing up for my son, and all the vulnerable people with disabilities who need us to be their voice. Unfortunately, abuse and discrimination against persons with disability continues unchecked and unpunished.
Please, share the petition amongst your networks.
A mother of a son with profound intellectual disability recently went through the same sickening experience as mine. Her son suffered severe injuries on his stomach and legs while under the care of his facility, and the staff took four days just to notify the mum of the injuries! It is outrageous and heartbreaking that our children are experiencing abuse. What is even worse is that there is nobody to listen to them - The disbelief by the police when you report an injury incident to them is unbelievable. Would they so easily shrug off a case if another young person was abused and there was no evidence? This discrimination must stop. Australia must be a world leader in protecting the rights of persons with disabilities.
Protocols are not enough. We need penalties, fines, punishments for the persons who are present when a vulnerable disability person is injured and for the organizations that allow it due to negligence of care or failure to report an incident. Mere protocols mean nothing if no one is punished or prosecuted when they are broken.
Please, share this petition calling for stronger laws to protect our vulnerable.
Thanks,
Anndrea Wheatley
