I'm one of many who have been unjustly hit with overdraft fees due to the untimely processing of automatic payments by companies I pay for services. I'm a senior citizen, living on a fixed income, receiving my payment on the 1st of each month. You would think that companies like Verizon, Geico and Spectrum would respect this and debit my account on the agreed dates, but they instead wait until inconvenient times, days or even weeks later.

Until recently, I was under the illusion that these companies were debiting my account as per the schedule, only to realize that they had been systematically overdrafting my account for years. This created a host of problems for me, mainly incurring overdraft fees and late fees unjustly. On several occasions, Verizon withdrew funds from my account even before the 1st of the month.

Unfortunately, I am far from the only person experiencing this issue. According to Pew Trusts research, more than 83% of overdrafters do not understand that they have the option to have transactions declined without incurring a fee. Even more worrisome, nearly 70% of the heavy overdrafters, those who pay over $100 annually in fees, are among the financially vulnerable populations, including seniors like me.

By instituting regulations requiring businesses to extract funds on precisely agreed dates, we can add a layer of transparency and predictability in financial transactions, ensuring companies remain accountable and customers, especially the elderly or financially vulnerable, are not unfairly burdened.

The time is now to level the playing field and institute regulations that protect us consumers. End the practice of untimely automatic withdrawals by corporations and stop the unjust financial strain on millions of individuals.
