Mandate 24-hour veterinary care in Greek cities
Mandate 24-hour veterinary care in Greek cities
The Issue
When my beloved cat fell ill late one night in Corfu, my urgent search to find a veterinarian capable of providing emergency care turned into a tragic ordeal. From 1 a.m. to 5 a.m., I desperately attempted to locate a vet who could save my cat's life. Yet, despite my best efforts, no veterinary clinics were available during the critical nighttime hours, and my cat passed away.
This devastating experience underscored a serious gap in the availability of veterinary services in Greece, particularly on the island of Corfu. Pets hold an irreplaceable role in our lives, offering companionship, love, and joy. When they fall sick or are injured, prompt medical attention is crucial for their well-being, and quite often, for their survival.
In Greece, there is currently no requirement obligating veterinarians to offer 24-hour emergency services in every city. This absence of round-the-clock care is a significant oversight in animal welfare policies. According to the Greek National Veterinary Association, there are approximately two million cats and one million dogs in Greece, many living in urban and semi-urban areas where veterinary services are clustered in limited daily hours.
We have the opportunity to change this. By mandating that every city across Greece establish at least one veterinary clinic offering 24-hour services, we can ensure that no pet owner has to endure the heartache of losing an animal companion due to inaccessible healthcare.
This change is not only feasible but necessary. It can be achieved by incentives such as government subsidies for clinics that operate on a 24-hour basis, collaborating with veterinary schools to utilize resident programs, or rotating emergency shifts amongst veterinarians in a given area.
The implementation of 24-hour veterinary services will improve health outcomes for animals, alleviate distress for pet owners, and ultimately demonstrate Greece’s commitment to animal welfare.
Let us protect our beloved pets by ensuring that they receive the emergency care they need, when they need it. Sign this petition today to call on Greek authorities to put in place these much-needed regulations for 24-hour veterinary services in every city.
