National Justice Project (NJP)Sydney, Australia
Jan 10, 2018
Dear Supporters, There are only 2 days left of our campaign. You have helped us reach 120k, - so close to funding two full time human rights lawyers to take on the Minister for Home Affairs in 2018. https://chuffed.org/project/chip-in-to-keep-dutton-in-court-season4justice I thought you should know that Peter Dutton has introduced a bill into parliament that bans refugees held in Australian detention centres from having a mobile phones to call their loved ones, their advocates and lawyers. The Minister is trying to bypass our successful legal action which stopped him from removing phones in detention. If indefinite detention wasn't already abhorrent enough, preventing innocent people from talking with their legal representatives and mums, dads and kids is incredibly cruel. NJP will fight for the human rights of vulnerable detainees every way we can. A lot of our work involves asylum seekers and refugees who are sick on Manus or Nauru. Too many times, we see the same story. A person becomes seriously ill. They beg for help but that call for help is ignored. In many cases, NJP has been able to step in and force the government to medically evacuate our clients. We have mentioned a few of those cases on our fundraising page. In other cases, NJP has stepped in after a detainee has died, their many pleas for help ignored by our government. We have pushed for coronial inquests and a Royal Commission to expose our government’s cruelty and to change the way that the Minister deals with critically ill men, women and children. We represent the families of most of those who died in Immigration detention. We know that without systemic change, there will be more tragedies, all of them preventable. https://chuffed.org/project/chip-in-to-keep-dutton-in-court-season4justice The NJP is determined to use every legal tool available to demand change. We will shine a light on every failure, every ignored plea, every unheard cry for help and every death. We are honoured that so many of you have supported our fight for justice, and made our work possible. With just two days to, we appreciate you chipping in and sharing our message with your friends and family. Warm regards, George Newhouse Principal Solicitor National Justice Project
