Dear Supporters,
Our last update to you was to thank you for your generous support for our program, CopWatch. As a result of your efforts, we were able to send a team of human rights lawyers, journalists, and activists across Australia to train Aboriginal communities to know their rights when filming police abuses, and how to expose such injustices.
If you are interested, you can watch this video of our work in Kalgoorlie on SBS.
In the meantime, NJP continues to fight for the rights of asylum seekers and refugees. Just last month we were in court for 3 women on Nauru who also required urgent gynaecological health care. We got them here and only your support for us made it possible. This year we have secured the safety of many, many women enduring the worst on Nauru and we are about to commence legal proceedings for a child refugee on Nauru that desperately requires medical treatment.
You probably will have heard that two more men have died on Manus and we are providing legal assistance to their grieving families. Our government once again showed its cruelty and lack of compassion by, initially, refusing to repatriate their bodies to grieving families. We acted swiftly and forced them to back down. This sorry episode shows once again how important it is to fight for the rights of the most marginalised. We don’t receive any government funding – all of our support comes from people like you who stand with us.
Right now our legal team are working up urgent legal proceedings to fight for the safety of a group of asylum seekers held in PNG.
Thank you to everyone who has so generously given us financial or moral support. The struggle continues.
