Thanks for taking the time to sign this petition and to add some heartfelt comments. This is the text of the letter I sent in with your signatures:
Dear Prime Minister,
please find attached a petition with 543 signatures which I organised through Change.org in protest at Peter Dutton's comments on Sky News last Tuesday (17 May 2016). The petition wording is:
Please sack Australia's Immigration Minister Peter Dutton for lying about refugees. Lying to condone policy decisions is not acceptable from our elected representatives.
I actually think the Minister should be sacked for the inhumane treatment of asylum seekers, but that is unlikely as these actions appear to have been taken with the support of your government. Misrepresenting the truth through the media however is not something that your government should tolerate, regardless of your policies. I'm sure that you are well aware of the inflammatory nature of Peter Dutton's remarks and I believe that this is not the approach to government that you personally would like to take. This petition is to encourage you to stand strong against the more selfish elements of your Party (and yes, I am aware that the Labour party also has selfish elements) - please don't try to win this election by pandering to people's fears and insecurities.
I wrote to you in October 2015, congratulating you on becoming Prime Minister and expressing my hope that you would implement a more humane refugee policy by taking asylum seekers off Manus and Nauru and processing them much more quickly to get them out of detention centres and into the community. I also asked for your Government to increase the number of refugees resettled by Australia. Thank-you for agreeing to take in additional refugees from Syria, and for a small increase in the annual intake of other refugees, but I believe Australia can do much more, and the Green's proposal of 50,000 a year is a more appropriate target.
I attach the list of signatures and also the list of heartfelt comments which some people attached to their signatures.
I know it's unlikely that you will sack Peter Dutton, but please push for more humane policies for asylum seekers and refugees, lift the level of debate, and if you do get back in, appoint a more humane Immigration Minister.
Yours sincerely,
Denise Bond
