The issue

There have been several dangerous near misses at the Wingrove Street school crossing used by our children every day. Parents are calling on council to urgently improve safety before a child is injured. Please sign and share the petition.

We ask Darebin Council to urgently improve safety at this crossing by introducing:

  • Clearer crossing signage and warnings
  • Flashing or illuminated crossing signals
  • Additional traffic-calming measures
  • Improved crossing visibility
  • Removal of the unused speed hump before the crossing

Students and teachers at Fairfield Primary School regularly cross between campuses using the pedestrian crossing on Wingrove Street.

In recent months, teachers supervising these crossings have reported increasingly dangerous driving behaviour, including excessive speed, failure to slow for pedestrians, and drivers attempting to move through the crossing while children are still crossing.

Several serious incidents have already occurred.

In one recent incident, a group of Year 6 students began crossing with their teacher supervising. A car approached the crossing at speed and failed to slow down despite the teacher signalling and yelling for the driver to stop. The teacher had to physically push the students back out of the road as the car continued toward them before braking suddenly over the crossing line.

The students involved were visibly shaken and distressed. In another incident, a teacher preparing to step onto the crossing was forced to stop when a car sped through the crossing without stopping. Teachers supervising the crossing report that these types of incidents are becoming more frequent.

They have observed:

  • Drivers travelling well above the 40 km/h school speed limit
  • Cars and bikes not slowing until the last moment
  • Vehicles stopping on or over the crossing lines
  • Drivers attempting to creep through while children are still crossing
  • Increasingly aggressive or impatient driving behaviour

While teachers do their best to supervise crossings safely, they cannot control driver behaviour, and current infrastructure does not appear to be adequately slowing traffic or alerting drivers to the presence of children.

Please sign this petition and share it amongst the community.
