The Issue

Make University Drive Safer: Install a Safe Pedestrian Crossing at NW 38th Drive
We are asking FDOT, Broward County, and the City of Coral Springs to take immediate action to create a safe pedestrian crossing on University Drive at or near NW 38th Drive before someone is seriously injured or killed.

Every Sabbath, a significant number of Orthodox Jewish residents and families in Coral Springs travel through this area on foot. Observant Jews do not drive on the Sabbath, which means walking is how members of our community get to synagogue, visit family and friends, and travel throughout the neighborhood.

This includes families with young children, elderly residents, and many other pedestrians who regularly need to cross University Drive.

Yet at NW 38th Drive, there is no crosswalk.

University Drive is a wide, heavily traveled roadway. Pedestrians attempting to cross without a designated and appropriately protected crossing are placed in an extremely dangerous situation.

This is not an occasional problem. It happens every week. It is predictable, and it is preventable.

We should not have to wait until a pedestrian is seriously injured or killed before action is taken.

We are calling upon the Florida Department of Transportation, Broward County, the City of Coral Springs, and our elected officials to work together immediately to:

Conduct a formal pedestrian and traffic safety study at University Drive and NW 38th Drive.
Observe the location during the Sabbath, when the actual pedestrian traffic can be seen.
Evaluate the installation of a marked and appropriately protected pedestrian crossing.
Consider additional safety measures such as pedestrian-activated warning lights, improved lighting and signage, a pedestrian refuge, signalization, or any other measures traffic engineers determine are appropriate.
Develop a clear plan and timeline for making this crossing safer.
We are not asking anyone to bypass engineering standards or install something that is not appropriate for the roadway. We are asking the responsible agencies to recognize an existing, recurring pedestrian hazard and find a safe solution before there is a tragedy.

This issue affects the Orthodox Jewish community in a particularly significant way because of Sabbath observance, but pedestrian safety benefits everyone—children, families, seniors, runners, walkers, and every Coral Springs resident who needs to cross this roadway.

Government works best when it addresses a known danger before, rather than after, someone gets hurt.

Please sign this petition and share it with your neighbors, friends, community organizations, and elected officials.

Together, we are asking for something simple:

Give our community a safe way to cross University Drive.
Act now—before a preventable tragedy occurs.
