The City just published the council packet for Monday night's meeting, and it's bad news for affordable housing.

Council members Dave Robinson and Courtney McFadden are bringing forth a proposal to remove all references to R1, R2, and by-right in the housing recommendations previously sent to the Planning Commission at Monday night's council meeting. R1 and R2 encompass more than 90% of the housing in the city.

What This Means

Our stance has always been that full consideration of the housing recommendations means seriously investigating the possibility of updating the R1 and R2 zoning districts and allowing for public input on these changes. So far, both the Planning Commission and Council have failed to do this. There have been zero attempts to truly gauge how our city feelings about housing recommendations and affordable housing in general. The Planning Commission has presented no zoning proposals to Council, there have been no public input sessions, there has been no discussion of conducting a housing study, and the housing recommendations haven't even been on the Council's meeting agenda since last summer.

From where we stand, it is clear that Council has been taken hostage by a small group of citizens who show up at every meeting to scream racist and classist things and then threaten, bully, and harass anyone who speaks in support of affordable housing. This is completely unacceptable. We believe that Monday's vote is not about doing what's best for the future of our city; it's about appeasing a small group who has repeatedly tried to shut down the conversation about housing in our city.
