I am one of over 60,000 Australians who believe the Great Barrier Reef should be recognised as an Australian citizen.

I urge you to use your power as Minister for Citizenship to grant the world’s largest living organism the same recognition and protections as every great Australian.

If contributing more than $6.4 billion to the economy every year and supporting over 64,000 jobs is not enough, think to yourself where Australian tourism would be if we were to lose our most iconic natural wonder.

You’ll find (short of being human), the living, breathing Great Barrier Reef meets all the criteria for citizenship as a permanent resident of Australia.

Any immediate action you can take to recognise this national asset as an Australian citizen is greatly appreciated.
