The Issue

The stretch of road one kilometer before and after the bridge over the railway at the Camino de Taboada is notoriously dangerous for cyclists trying to ride on the Ciclovia on Highway 51.

In addition, the sudden ends of the Ciclovia in the kilometers-long unfinished section also forces cyclists into shoulders regularly used by motorists and motorcyclists.

The sudden narrowing of the road approaching the bridge on both sides forces cyclists and cars to share an unacceptably cramped space. It brings a significant chance of serious accident to an otherwise  excellent new cycling attraction.

Cyclists must move into the cars’ lane just at the time when drivers attention is focused on the cars slowing in front of them.

We propose a straightforward yet effective solution: install bumpers to prevent vehicles from using the narrow shoulders as additional lanes and implement yellow flashing lights at the bridge as well as at the unfinished ends of the Ciclovia to alert drivers.

These measures will drastically reduce the risks that cyclists face. Similar safety implementations in other regions have led to a reduction in accidents by up to 30%, according to studies published by traffic safety experts.

Moreover, ensuring safe cycling routes boosts tourism, encourages healthier lifestyles, and contributes positively to environmental efforts by promoting non-motorized transport. The flourishing bike culture in San Miguel de Allende and Dolores Hidalgo deserves infrastructure that matches its spirit.

We call upon our local government and transport authorities to prioritize the safety of our Ciclovia users by making these essential changes. Sign this petition to demand action and protect the lives of cyclists and pedestrians before an accident claims more than just peace of mind. Your support could make all the difference.
