Make sanitary pads free and accessible in schools, malls, and hospitals

As women, we know that our periods are a natural and essential part of life that cannot be ignored or postponed. Yet, too often, menstruation is treated as something to be quietly managed or hidden, and access to the necessary supplies is not always guaranteed. This is not just a convenience issue; it is a matter of basic human dignity and equality.
Imagine being in a school, shopping in a mall, or visiting a hospital and discovering you have started your period unexpectedly, only to find there are no sanitary products available. In these situations, women often feel embarrassed and stressed, having to rely on potentially unsanitary alternatives like wads of tissue or paper towels. This is not acceptable, and change must be made.
Just like toilet paper is freely provided in public restrooms, sanitary pads should be available for all who need them. They should be considered a basic necessity, as indispensable as soap and hand towels, and supplied in all girls' and women's restrooms in schools, malls, and hospitals.
Consider this: women will use more than 11,000 disposable sanitary products in their lifetime, and yet many will have no access to these essential items when they need them most. This could lead to missed days of school and work, infections, and even avoidance of public places due to fear and shame.
Some places are already leading the way. In Scotland, for instance, legislation was passed making period products freely available in public spaces. If they can do it, there’s no reason we can't follow suit in our community. It is time for our school boards, shopping malls management, and healthcare facilities to commit to providing free sanitary pads in their restrooms; it is time for us to demand this change.
