Make parking free at TUS Athlone
The Issue
As a student at the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) in Athlone, one would expect the institution to be an environment where education is fostered without undue financial burdens. Unfortunately, the reality is quite the opposite when it comes to parking facilities. Currently, parking costs an exorbitant €5.40 per day, which compounds to nearly €1000 over the course of a nine-month academic year. For many students, already strained by tuition fees and living costs, this additional expense is both unwarranted and exploitative.
The parking facilities at TUS Athlone, managed by the company APCOA, operate as a for-profit scheme that seems to target students unfairly. On top of the monetary burden, students are continuously faced with the anxiety of receiving parking tickets or, even worse, having their cars clamped. This aggressive enforcement oftentimes disrupts our focus on why we are here: to learn and grow. The system in place appears to prioritize revenue over student wellbeing.
We understand that managing and maintaining parking facilities incurs costs, but the burden should not fall so heavily on students who are already juggling academic pressures and financial limitations. There are practical solutions that can be implemented: first and foremost, TUS and APCOA must collaborate to make parking free for students. Alternatively, a steep reduction in fees or a permit system that takes into account the financial realities of the student body would be much appreciated and serve as a fair compromise.
Around the world, many universities offer free or heavily subsidized parking as a way to support their students and ensure that transportation does not become a barrier to education. TUS Athlone should follow this example and commit to fostering an environment that supports rather than hinders its students. This change will not only alleviate financial stress but also demonstrate the university's commitment to the welfare of its students.
By standing together and voicing our collective displeasure, we can urge TUS and APCOA to consider student-focused policies that prioritize education over profit. Please join me in signing this petition to advocate for free parking at TUS Athlone. Your support is crucial in making this much-needed change a reality.
