Dear friends,
I bring good news as we keep up continuous efforts to reach our goal of curbing rising Caesarean numbers. The joint commission set up by the Maharashtra government met on the 23rd of May and its outcome clearly shows that we are steadily moving towards our goal. We had discussions with eminent doctors, FOGSI, state health officials, public health experts to ensure greater accountability and transparency by following World Health Organisation guidelines. The agenda had been set by the Government Resolution (GR) which asked the commission to find a way to reduce rising C-sections, give a guideline to healthcare providers so that unnecessary C-sections can be avoided and look at institutional data and our right to information.
After much debate and discussion, a clear plan of action has been charted out. On our part, we have presented recent research, international precedents as well as some Indian examples and shared women’s experiences during childbirth.
Stay tuned to find out what concrete moves are being made by this state commission - another update will follow soon.
The tremendous support that you have given has created a wave demanding transparency in healthcare in India. Please keep sharing and supporting #safebirth. Speak out about your personal experiences in the comment box because our stories have power to change the world.
In solidarity,
Subarna Ghosh
