Dear friends, I am deeply grateful to you for supporting this petition and building a movement to improve maternal health in India. We have already collected more than 3 lakh signatures and the numbers are rising. Though our journey isn’t over yet, what our collective effort has achieved is incredible and I am happy to update you on some of the important milestones that our petition has reached. The first step towards our goal was when Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi responded to our petition, giving her full support and issued a letter to the health ministry urging it to act on it. In fact, the petition was even brought up during question hour in the Indian parliament, proving how critical the issue of commercialization of healthcare has become. Both the print and electronic media raised it several times pointing out the abnormally high Caesarean percentage that completely violates WHO guidelines. The health ministry at the Centre has responded by writing to the state governments to enquire into the number of Caesarean deliveries being conducted. But the biggest achievement has been the policy-level change initiated in the Central Government Health Scheme or CGHS norms. As per the demand made by our petition, it is now mandatory for all hospitals seeking empanelment under CGHS to display their Caesarean numbers. Such a huge, national-level change would not have been possible without your active support. The crucial role of this petition was further recognized when I was felicitated by the WCD Ministry as an ‘Agent of Change’. To speed up the process for all hospitals to declare their Caesarean percentage, I have also separately petitioned the Chief Ministers of States with high Caesarean rates. The Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis has already responded positively and I will be meeting him very soon to take this forward. I look forward to your continued support and encouragement in making this petition into a policy. The tremendous impact that we have made is evident and I shall not rest until this dream turns into reality. Thank you once again. In solidarity, Subarna Ghosh
