His owner, Susan Santics, suffers from severe depression due to trauma diagnosed by her doctor years previously. Ms. Santics' legally required accommodation as protected by the Human Rights Code was not followed through by Vancouver Animal Control. That is why she adopted PUNKY. To help her emotional trauma. She admits she did not fully understand what was happening...this is normal for people with #PTSD. I have spoken several times with Ms. Santics and it's quite clear she is not able to understand complex events such as court proceedings.
Vancouver Animal Control failed to recognized Ms. Santics needed assistance (as prescribed under British Columbia Human Rights Code).. This should have been visibly and verbally clear to prosecutor Robert LeBlanc whom Ms. Santics states she has spoken with several times.
This is truly a case of a violation of #HumanRights #mentalillness too many employees not properly trained in recognizing owners with heightened assistance requirements. I have Ms. Santics' permission to post this.
We urge Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart to consider the long term reputational harm to the city. As much courage as it takes for Mr. Stewart to be arrested (Wikipedia):
"On March 23, 2018, Stewart was arrested for civil contempt during a demonstration against the Kinder Morgan pipeline."
We ask the person that we see leading Vancouver, British Columbia...a leader that let himself be arrested for civil disobedience...former #NDP...the leader that made a strategical decision to announce his candidacy to run for Vancouver Mayor...we call upon this same leader who believed in his advocacy and strategy...to not be silent...and to speak beyond silence #SAVEPUNKY
Isn't that crazy? To punish the dog owner...they kill their dog. That's medieval.
Letting PUNKY live may not be the 'legally right' thing...but it is the morally right thing to do. And by definition...societal morality and ethics define law.
Will there be hindsight on whether Vancouver Animal Control and Mayor Kennedy Stewart mishandled this public vote of confidence...this opportunity to heal the distrust between the city and dog owners.
