A man in Indore shot a dog with his rifle. The dog died soon after. The caregiver who is a doctor himself used to feed the dog and even got the dogs of his area vaccinated. According to him the accused and his wife were returning home and as it was raining so they were running towards their home. Seeing them run the dog ran after them and bit the wife. The accused later at night came out with his gun and shot the dog in his neck. The people for Animals, Indore unit has filed an FIR against the culprit and the police has arrested him.

The accused in his defence said that the dog is rabid and has bitten around 15 people. Hence he shot the dog.

This is what all the dog abusers and murderers say. This is utter nonsense. The dog bit because the couple were running. Dogs often chase people who are running. They even chase bike and cars. And majority of the people try to shoo them away with their legs. It's quite possible that the lady may have tried to shoo the dog away with her leg. And this may have provoked the dog to bite her leg. It's high time people be told that when a dog runs after us we should just stand still. The dog just want to ensure that we are not a threat to  him or to the surrounding. The dog is a natural.watchman. Watchman designated by God but unfortunately whenever he barks or runs after strangers or unknown people we punish him by beating him up or relocating him to another area or in worse situation even kill him.  

Also the caregivers including the complainant in this case did not find any abnormality in the dog. A rabid dog will never behave in a normal manner. And the first person who will come to know that the dog has become rabid will be his caregiver.  The caregiver will be the first person to detect the rabid symptoms in a dog as the dog will behave abnormally. Also the caregivers one of whom is a doctor himself and the complainant in this case used to get the dogs living in their vicinity vaccinated.

Unfortunately in India any dog which bites is declared rabid and then people try to kill him. There is hardly any awareness about rabies and dog vaccination against rabies. There are only myths attached with stray dogs. Majority of the Indians think that stray dogs are rabid. 

Wonder when will our municipal corporations create awareness about ABC program,  rabies vaccination for canines, dog behaviour and dog laws????

 If only the accused knew that killing a dog (rabid or non rabid)  will lead him to prison then probably he would not have shot the dog. 

If only the people of India knew that even a normal dog bites if provoked. And a bite from a normal dog will never cause rabies in any human. 

Such incidents could have been avoided if only right awareness had been created. 

Wake up municipal corporations before more innocent dogs die due to sheer lack of knowledge of animal laws and rabies.

Majority of the caregivers face the same problem in India. They are often mentally tortured and abused. They are rediculd by their own neighbours and in worse scenario even physically assaulted.
