My heart pains when I read cases of atrocities happening against man's best friend in educational institutions. Schools and colleges are temples of learning where young minds are moulded and groomed. But unfortunately many institutions are proving it all wrong. IIT Madras is again in news and this time again for its  inhuman behaviour towards the man's best friend. They have caged the campus dogs this time.

It seems the Institute is going to the dark ages?

Have they mistaken dogs for lions and tigers?  There are a lot of fishy things going on in the campus right from hiring an NGO for getting the dogs sterilized when already blue cross was getting the dogs sterilized. And barring few, majority of the dogs are already sterilized. So why put dogs in the cage and that too all of them together. One is very clear after reading all this. Tbe authorities know not much about dog behaviour nor about dog rules. They have all kinds of misconceptions and fear about dogs which is leading to all this chaos and cruelty on the campus.

Another educational institute of repute BITS Pilani in Hyderabad has been in news for their inhuman behaviour. A faculty was found chasing a dog and instructing the guards to throw the dogs out by pelting stones at them. A female dog's throat was slit (pic in the post) with a wire and her five pups poisoned and thrown in the forest. The dog feeders are harassed and tormented by the campus authorities. A police complaint has also been lodged but till date no action has been taken against the perpetrators.

If this is how educational institutions, their deans and faculties are behaving with the voiceless then what can be expected by the common man of India?

If teachers are pelting stones and asking guards to pelt stones at dogs and killing them then what can be expected of students graduating from such institutes?

It's time the ministry of Fisheries,  Animal Husbandry and Dairying along with the Education Ministry frames a guideline for educational institutions for dog management in the campus.

We cannot leave dogs of the campus on the mercy of few good hearted caregivers. Dog feeding, sterilization and their medication should be the responsibility of the institute and they should do everything to give the dogs living on the campus a secure and happy life.

Why can't the NSS be involved in dog feeding and sterilization of campus dogs?

Why the environmental studies projects not focus on dogs living on the campus?

Environmental studies is taught in every school and college and NSS is a student body which is existing in every college then why can't they be roped in for dog feeding and sterilization?

If only there was a guideline in place then probably this ugly situation and such act of cruelty would have never happened.

All this is happening in India because of sheer ignorance about dog laws and dog behaviour. If only the institute's knew about the ABC program and how to get dogs sterilized then probably today a female dog with her five pups would not have been tortured in BITS Pilani nor the dogs caged in  IIT Madras.

Our furry friends are paying a heavy price for our negligence and lack of vision. Unfortunately the policy makers in animal sector could not envision what is happening today.

If they don't come out with a guideline today then very soon there will be many more educational institutions who will do exactly what IIT Madras and BITS Pilani are doing today.

The govt needs to create awareness about the ABC program and dog behaviour. These are the only two mantras which can bring a peaceful coexistence between man and dog.

Because the truth is that the majority of the Indians including the most educated neither know the dog rules nor the dog behaviour.
