The issue

A Safer Future Starts With Education - a belief rooted deep in our commitment to safeguarding our young generations. As someone who cares immensely about the future of our youths, I am reaching out to highlight a significant gap within Rototuna High School's otherwise comprehensive health, safety, and welfare policy.

While the school strives to create a protected environment, it overlooks a critical area: education about domestic violence and healthy relationships. This is not just a gap in our school's policy but a gap in many educational systems worldwide. Today, domestic violence can manifest as controlling behavior, intimidation, emotional abuse, and coercive control. These insidious forms of abuse are not always easy to recognize, especially for young people who are only beginning to navigate relationships and adult life.

According to recent studies, one in four women and one in nine men experience severe intimate partner physical violence, which often escalates into other forms of abuse as well. A staggering number of these individuals report never having received education on what constitutes a healthy relationship during their schooling years. As a result, they remain unaware of the red flags and the resources available to them.

We believe that by integrating comprehensive, mandatory education on domestic violence and healthy relationships into the school curriculum, we can arm students with the knowledge and tools they need to recognize warning signs early on. This educational framework should aim not only to inform but also to empower students to seek help, support peers in distress, and build healthy, respectful relationships.

Incorporating these topics concretely into the school curriculum involves collaboration with experienced educators, partnership with local domestic violence support centers, and counselor-led workshops. It also means updating school policies to reflect this need, thereby aligning them with a forward-thinking approach focused on prevention and empowerment.

By supporting this petition, we call on educational authorities, policymakers, and school boards to take decisive action. Let us pave the way for safer schools by ensuring that each student has access to essential education on domestic violence and healthy relationships. Together, we can cultivate an understanding that prevents harm and fosters a community founded on respect and equality.

Join us in this pivotal movement to protect and empower our future generations. Sign this petition to make education on domestic violence compulsory in every school curriculum, starting with Rototuna High School. Help us ensure a safer, more informed future for all students.
