Because of your support, and the support of tens of thousands of other Canadians, the federal Liberal government made some changes to increase bank accountability.

But Canada’s Big Banks are still gouging out record profits while many Canadians are suffering financially – $70 billion in 2025, which is $50 billion more in profits than in 2010.

And the Big Banks paid their CEOs an average of more than $12 million each, and also gave more than $27 billion in bonuses to their employees.

Credit card interest rates are still at gouging high levels, mortgage loan interest rates are not coming down as fast as the Bank of Canada’s interest rate, and banks keep hiking fees even though many customers do all their own banking transactions on their phones or computers, without the help of any bank employee.

A March 2024 study found that Canada’s Big Banks charge Canadians more than $7 billion every year in extra fees that banks in England don’t charge!

Banks also often blame victims of bank account fraud and refuse to give them their money back even when the bank allowed the fraud to happen.  And many customers still suffer discrimination in bank lending and service and other abuses.

The watchdogs that are supposed to protect Canadians from gouging, fraud and other abuses are weak lapdogs that can’t penalize banks for wrongdoing, or refuse to penalize them in many cases.

The Big Banks spend tens of millions of dollars each year lobbying to protect their high profits and their multi-million dollar executive salaries and bonuses.  They have these tens of millions of dollars to spend because they gouge it out of your pocket through excessively high interest rates and banking fees.
