Kia orana, everyone. Thank you: nearly 1,700 of you have signed, and you've shared this petition almost 1,500 times.
We've now published a full evidence page at snorkelcookislands.com/petition. It sets out our case in two parts:
- The environment: peer-reviewed research on how boat noise affects reef fish and turtles, what the US EPA says about fuel lost from older two-stroke engines, and how vessel speed affects whether turtles can get out of the way.
- Safety: what Cook Islands law already requires of commercial boats, and why a passage the Cook Islands Tourism chief executive called "notorious for drownings" (RNZ, Dec 2023) needs those rules actively checked.
Every claim is linked to its source. We've also started a blog, beginning with "What boat noise does to turtles and reef life".
One thing you can do today: share the evidence page with one friend who has swum with turtles on Rarotonga.
