Last night I was really keen to watch Sweeny Todd after not seeing it for years. Sadly, I could not find it with audio description.
I then went scrolling through Netflix trying to find a decent film for Halloween. With horror/thriller/dark fantasy films there is a lot of dark, spooky, suspent scenes with minimal dialogue, which can be extremely difficult to follow whrn you’re blind.
While I was scrolling, I was shocked by how many halloween films don’t have AD. It frustrates me that I have a limited choice of films to watch and I heavily rely on it for these genres.
I was then chatting to a friend on messenger who suggested a film to watch, only to find out it did not have audio description either. I did try and watch about 10 minutes of the film but still found it extremely difficult to follow without the description as the screen was quite dark and there was not much dialogue. I feel like I’m being left out of the conversation and restricted to accessing films.
This is why it’s so important to support my campaign to make audio description available on all films and TV programmes. blind and partially sighted people should have equal access to entertainment on TV, cinemas and streaming services.
