Aragon student hit in Crosswalk on 9/14/26, Take Action Now

On Monday 9/14/26 at 3:55pm, an Aragon High School student was hit while legally using the crosswalk at Aragon and Alameda de las Pulgas in San Mateo.

This is not the first time this has happened, and community members pledge that this will be the last Aragon student going to or from school.  We need your help to make that happen. Here are a couple ways to support, including automated letter writing tools and emailing city leaders. Both only take a couple minutes.

1. Alameda + Aragon Student Pedestrian Hit by Driver
- Petition/Letter Writing Tool - takes a minute - be on record saying you stand up for student safety - this is a joint effort between AHS PTSO and Move San Mateo (ie Safe Streets for Everyone)

2.  City of San Mateo proposing to increase speed limits near schools 
- Petition/Letter Writing Tool - takes a minute. Let the San Mateo City Council know that you oppose the proposal to increase speed limits on many streets in San Mateo. Speeding is already out of hand on our roads and we shouldn't encourage drivers to go any faster. This includes raising speed limits in 19 areas, including:

• A 5 mph increase on Alameda adjacent to Aragon High and Baywood Elementary Schools. 
•  Increasing speed limits to 50 mph on J Hart Clinton next to the Ryder Park Playground and Seal Point Park 
• A 5 mph increase on Delaware adjacent to Sunnybrae Elementary and Nueva Upper Schools and the new Delaware Safe Routes to School corridor
•  A 5 mph increase on Norfolk, a street with a terrible history of crashes and next to Cottage Grove (formerly LEAD) Elementary, Bayside K-8 School, Parkside Montessori K-8 school

Alameda de las Pulgas is of utmost importance for pedestrian, bicycle, and driver safety.  It’s one of the longest roads in San Mateo, and is home to 5 schools, numerous places of worship, parks, community centers, and our San Mateo Senior Center.  Crossing Alameda, a four-lane road with speeding cars, is treacherous, and our student and broader community is feeling that viscerally today.  This cannot happen again. 

We ask for your leadership on this unsafe area, with the following asks for safety:
Vehicle Speed, Alameda de las Pulgas
- Perform the long-planned road diet (narrower vehicle travel lanes) which is proven to reduce vehicle speed
Traffic Light, Aragon & Alameda
- Leading Pedestrian Indicator 
- Protected left turns 
- No right on red 
- Install a pedestrian crossing signal (crossing Aragon) - it is missing"
