Maintain University's Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Policies
Le problème
As Marshall University students studying to become future psychologists, we place immense value on diversity, equity, and inclusion. These principles form the cornerstone of the American Psychological Association's (APA) ethics code, which we fervently uphold. We have an obligation, both academically and ethically, to ensure fair access, treatment, and equity to all persons, transcending the myriad of human differences.
However, we are concerned about the potential removal of policies adhering to these principles within our university- a haven that should cherish and cultivate variety and inclusivity. Since diversity enriches learning experiences, fostering critical thinking and a respect for varied perspectives, such actions would dramatically undercut the educational growth of many.
Studies indicate the positive impact of diversity on not just education but also on psychological well-being. An inclusive environment has been associated with a decreased rate of anxiety and depression (APA, 2012). The removal of critical diversity, equity, and inclusion policies would not only disregard APA's guidelines but would also negatively impact the emotional welfare of students.
We implore the university administration to uphold the commitment to these essential principles. Disbanding them would not only be detrimental to a nurturing educational environment, but it could also mar the reputation of our esteemed institution. Please, let us prioritize inclusivity and fair treatment as a reflection of school spirit and respect for human dignity. Stand with us in voicing out against the potential removal of these vital policies. Sign this petition in support of our cause.
We Are Marshall means EVERYONE!
