The Issue

As someone who has called Ireland home for many years, I am deeply concerned about the proposed changes to Ireland’s citizenship residency requirements. These changes would increase the residency requirement from five years to eight years, significantly impacting individuals who have already established deep roots in this beautiful country. This issue not only affects me personally but also thousands of residents like me who have contributed to and grown with Ireland.

For many of us, Ireland is not just a place; it is our home. We have worked, studied, and integrated into Irish society, contributing to its culture and economy. The current five-year residency requirement strikes a fair balance, allowing individuals to demonstrate their commitment and assimilation into Irish society without facing unnecessary hurdles. This proposed increase to eight years would be a major setback, making it harder for many dedicated residents to secure their future and fully contribute to this nation.

Moreover, language requirements must be fair and accessible, reflective of the diverse backgrounds of individuals who have lived and been educated in Ireland. Requiring additional and potentially burdensome language testing could impose unfair barriers to those who have grown up speaking English as a first or second language while living in Ireland and have pursued their education here.

The proposed changes are not just administrative tweaks; they could fundamentally alter the lives of thousands who wish to officially become part of the Irish family. It is essential to recognize the value and contributions of those who have already spent significant time in Ireland and are awaiting the opportunity to formalize their citizenship without facing stricter and potentially exclusionary hurdles.

I urge the Irish Government to reconsider these changes, maintaining the current five-year requirement and ensuring language assessments are fair and do not disproportionately impact those who have built their lives here. Let us keep Ireland a welcoming and inclusive home for all who wish to call it their own.

Please sign this petition to keep citizenship requirements fair and accessible for all residents of Ireland.
