Keep Educational Resource Officers (EROs) in MMSD High Schools

Dear Dr. Cheatham and Members of the MMSD School Board:

We, parents, taxpayers, students and MMSD staff who sign this petition, fully support the Educational Resource Officer (ERO) Program in Madison High Schools. The ERO role is pivotal in keeping our schools safe and our children free from harm. The safety of MMSD students and staff in our schools should be your top priority. The board's hesitation on this subject is deeply troubling and demonstrates a complete disregard for the safety of students and staff. If you remove the EROs, you will leave students and staff without needed protection and place lives in peril.

Officers Johnson, Creech, Franco and Turner are outstanding public servants. Every day, they support our kids and faculty through the relationships they create. These relationships are positive and mentoring. The officers play a vital role in establishing and implementing the school's safety plan. Through their physical presence on site, they both prevent and defuse conflicts at the schools.

If the EROs are gone, who will be there to protect our children? Will you be there to defuse the situation? Will you commit to be there to disarm the gunman? You are gambling with the lives of our children and staff, and that is unacceptable.

As parents, students and staff, we can no longer sit idle while you debate the fate of our children and staff members. Threats in the community exist and extend into our schools. We urge you to end this debate and renew the contract to ensure the safest possible environment for our MMSD students and staff members.

Let common sense and safety prevail by keeping the EROs.
