Lucy Stammers started this petition to Lucy Stammers

Having spent the weekend living in what felt like a war zone with my two petrified horses and terrified dogs and cat, due to fireworks being set off everywhere, I have decided to launch a petition to have fireworks banned for the public to purchase.

Due to inconsiderate neighbours setting off fireworks from their house that backs onto our fields and stables, one of my horses ran through a fence, they both were sweating from head to toe and I have never seen animals so frightened in my life. Although there is an Animal Welfare Act 2006, which states that "fireworks must not be set off near livestock or horses in fields, or close to buildings that house livestock", this is not reinforced and no one adheres to it. Therefore, I have decided to take things into my own hands after how my poor animals have suffered over the weekend, to make a change.

With fireworks being louder than ever, more readily available and being set off whenever a person feels like it, it is impossible to know when you can take extra precaution to care for your animals. Horses die each year because of fireworks and it has got to stop. It isn't only horses, cats, dogs, livestock and pets, are terrified when they go off, as they don't understand what they are.

Additionally, elderly residents at care homes, especially those who are fragile or with Alzheimers, will be scared and confused as much as the animals, and this could result badly for them too.

What's more, although public firework displays are safer, these can still go wrong, which Sunday 4th November showed at a display in Essex, where the fireworks were set off into the crowd, causing a lot of harm and injuries to members of the public.

Lastly, if fireworks end up in the wrong persons hands then it can be a very dangerous situation for them and those around them. For example, teenagers who let them off in public places, which I have seen happen over the weekend, or even much much worse!

I am therefore asking if you could sign my petition. By signing it, you would be agreeing with me that fireworks should not be allowed to be purchased by the public, there should be action taken against those setting them off, and that they can only be used for organised firework displays, such as The Braintree Rugby Club. This way, animal owners and carers will know the time and the date that there will be fireworks, so we can prepare and ensure that our animals and elderly will be as safe as possible. They should only be allowed to be set off on the 5th November, not for days and weeks before and after.

Thank you for reading this and signing my petition. After seeing my animals suffer so much this year, I cannot let them go through it again!
