Lower grade boundaries for all math levels IB May 2026

Lower grade boundaries for all math levels IB May 2026
The Issue
The International Baccalaureate (IB) program is renowned for its rigorous academic standards and its emphasis on holistic education. However, the pressure of these high standards can be overwhelming for students, particularly in mathematics, a subject that consistently poses challenges to many young learners. For the May 2026 session, we urge the IB Organization to consider lowering the grade boundaries for all math levels, providing a more balanced and attainable goal for students globally.
In recent years, evidence has shown that the difficulty of IB mathematics assessments has increased significantly. This has resulted in many students underperforming, not as a reflection of their abilities or efforts, but due to the unrealistic expectations set by current grade boundaries. According to recent IB results data, the average scores in mathematics have been declining compared to other subjects, further highlighting the need for an adjustment.
Lowering grade boundaries can have several positive effects. First, it can reduce the high levels of stress and anxiety among students, which have been linked to mental health issues. The pressure to meet exceedingly high standards often leads to burnout, diminishing students' love for learning and their overall educational experience. By lowering the grade boundaries, the IB can help foster a more supportive academic environment, allowing students to approach their studies with confidence.
Furthermore, such a change would acknowledge the diverse learning needs and paces of students, promoting inclusivity and fairness. Not every student has the same aptitude for mathematics, and the current uniform standards do not account for this diversity. Adjusting the grade boundaries would ensure that all students have a fair opportunity to succeed, regardless of their innate or acquired skill levels.
This proposal does not compromise the IB's commitment to high academic standards but rather aligns with its philosophy of nurturing well-rounded individuals. By recalibrating the grade expectations, we can better prepare students for real-world challenges, where understanding and application of mathematical concepts are more important than merely achieving high exam scores.
We encourage the IB Organization to consider this change for the benefit of students worldwide. Your signature on this petition will help make a meaningful difference in the educational journeys of countless young learners.
