The Issue

The road from Carlingford to Omeath is populated by young families and older residents. It is popular with walkers who come to enjoy the spectacular scenery and great walking the area has to offer.

Unfortunately, it is also popular with dangerous drivers who ignore the already too lenient speed limits. The speed limit is currently 80km/hour, on a road where people live, walk and cross over to get to the safer greenway that runs near the coast.

It is wrong to use the term accidents in these cases, because we can predict what will happen on a road:

1. Fatal accidents are four times as likely on rural “A” roads as urban “A” roads.

2. The risk of death is approximately four times higher when a pedestrian is hit at 40mph than at 30mph.
3. A car travelling at 50mph will take approximately 125 feet to stop.

Last Friday, my dear dad was knocked down for the second time on this treacherous road. He has broken bones and tissue damage, but is his usual resilient and positive self- but it goes without saying that neither he, nor the other residents, tourists, walkers and cyclists deserve to be subject to such needless risk.

Hopefully this won't happen again to my dad- we can't afford a third time. Louth county council need to do more to protect the children, young people and walkers who deserve to use the road safely.

The difference of a few miles per hour can mean the difference between life and death. The faster someone is driving, the less time they have to stop if something unexpected happens.

Please sign this petition to get the speed limit reduced to a safe level. Thank you.
