To fire DWP employee who threw cat from bucket truck on 11/15/14

The Issue

On the afternoon of Saturday, November 15, 2014, a DWP worker was called to assist in rescuing a cat from a power pole located on Jardine Ave. in Sunland, CA. When the worker showed up with a bucket truck, the community that had gathered to watch the rescue was grateful that the cat, which had been stuck on the power pole for three days without food or water, would finally be safe. Instead, after coaxing the cat into his arms, the worker threw it over the side of the bucket truck, through the air, from twenty feet up. He laughed about throwing the cat from the bucket, saying it was scratching up his $20,000 gloves. This action is a very poor reflection of the Department of Water and Power and the way they train their workers to handle animal emergencies. We feel this worker should not just be disciplined, but should be removed from public service. Animal cruelty should not be tolerated on any level in City service.
