LACMA Tore Down The Bing Theatre: Tell Michael Govan What You Think

LACMA Lovers League

Apr 8, 2020 —

Dear fellow LACMA Lover,

Thank you for joining nearly 3500 concerned citizens who have signed the petition urging the Los Angeles County Supervisors to reconsider their approval of the Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for LACMA's redevelopment plan.

Today is a bad day. Even though Los Angeles is under quarantine, with almost all business shut down and citizens locked in their homes, LACMA has been rushing to destroy our beloved museum. In just a few short hours, the landmark Bing Theatre has been almost completely demolished. Artist Gary Basemen captured this heartbreaking video this morning.

We’ve been seeing images of the demolition widely shared on social media and reading the angry, heartfelt comments. Those comments really should be going to Michael Govan, the “visionary” who decided to tear LACMA down. So we made this sympathy card, from all the LACMA Lovers to Michael Govan, to tell him we won’t forgive or forget what he did today.

Are you mad, too? Please add your personal comments to this update, and pass it on. We’ll make sure Michael Govan gets the message.

Even though the museum’s theatre building has been lost, the Save LACMA nonprofit is moving forward with its ballot measure.

Now more than ever, it is so clear that LACMA needs to be held accountable to the public. A healthy and empathic institution would not behave so thoughtlessly, while our city is in such a delicate, painful state. Or as one tweet perfectly put it, "Read the room, LACMA."

Please keep sharing the petition link (http://chng.it/PBQw6hhzdX) with your friends who love LACMA and want it to remain at the heart of our city's culture and community. And stay tuned for updates as we have them.

Yours for Los Angeles,
Kim Cooper & Richard Schave
