Dear supporters
Much-needed new beds
Earlier this week, Mildmay Hospital took delivery of four new hospital beds, which are urgently needed to cope with the influx of new patients resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Mildmay is now caring for patients with HIV-related neurological conditions - as we always have done, but now added to this are people who are homeless as well as COVID-19 patients. Some of our patients fit into all three categories, but all our patients require the specialist care and rehabilitation that Mildmay has expertise in.
The beds were ordered several weeks ago, and we have been full of anticipation for their arrival, as they are replacing existing beds that are no longer fit-for-purpose.
This is not the end of the story, however. Hospital equipment requires constant maintenance and/or replacement and renewal. We still need new beds to replace others that are reaching the end of their life and we are asking our supporters to help us fund their purchase.
We initially plan to purchase four additional specialist beds and mattresses and have so far raised over £6,000 towards the £20,000 cost, thanks to your generosity. Find out more.
Scrub Hub East London donates more scrubs to Mildmay
In April, we were donated 10 pairs of beautiful, handmade scrubs, thanks to the generosity of a group of local seamstresses making scrubs at home for the NHS and others – Scrub Hub East London.
This week, we received another batch of scrubs. As a charity, we could not otherwise afford all the PPE we need so we thank them for providing this essential gear.
We were also visited by another one of our PPE heroes, Jian He, in our reception, delivering another donation of 3,000 surgical masks.
This is the latest batch of thousands of items that we have been very pleased to receive as it alleviates the huge costs of PPE supplies. As a charity, our budget for the additional requirements of dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic is minuscule, yet we are averaging over £10,000 per month in PPE costs when before the pandemic, we would only have to spend about £800 per month.
Despite the easing of restrictions, the crisis continues, particularly for those with complex medical conditions and the most vulnerable in society, who are our patients.
Remembering Princess Diana’s impact on HIV/AIDS
On the anniversary of Princess Diana's birthday on 1st July, we remembered her many visits to Mildmay and the profound impact she made breaking through the stigma around HIV and AIDS. More personally, we remember the love and kindness she showed to both our patients and staff on numerous occasions. Today, thanks in part to Diana's support for our hospital, Mildmay is still at the forefront of HIV treatment and rehabilitation.
On behalf of everyone at Mildmay - deepest gratitude and sincere thanks.
