Parliamentary questions 9 September 2009 E-3734/2009 Answer given by Ms Vassiliou on behalf of the Commission The Commission has followed the discussions on the nature of fibromyalgia as a distinct medical condition. Although at certain times, there were experts within and outside the world of medicine who believed that this disorder did not exist, others considered that this disease is a distinct medical condition. This situation has given rise to major differences of opinion concerning the ability of fibromyalgia patients to work, and to their entitlement to social security benefits. Nowadays it appears as an established and accepted fact that this syndrome resembles a genuine, severely and incapacitating disorder, even if controversies remain, and even if there are still discussions in relation to the most appropriate terminology and classification. For more details on relevant actions the Honourable Member is kindly referred to the Commission's replies to Written Questions E‑4898/08 by Mr Kilroy Silk and E‑6262/08 by Mr Popa(1). The current version of the World Health Organisation's International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) includes ‘Fibromyalgia (Code M79.7)’ and this should be recognised in all Member States. The organisation and delivery of health services and medical care is primarily the responsibility of the Member States. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the Member State Government to decide how to provide diagnosis, treatment and care as well as complementary psycho-social measures in its national context.
