Once again I have received a letter that I would like to share with the LISD community. I believe by sharing these letters and protecting their identity your voices as educators and employees will be heard.:
I've noticed a trend in LISD. It seems as though LISD has a tendency to promote individuals to principal positions with no regard to their ability to relate to others in a professional manner. A principal should support all teachers in the presence of the student body. It is through this support that we teach our students respect for others and tolerance for differences of opinion. It is a sad sight to see a group of students disrespect a teacher or talk negatively about a teacher and have a principal laugh and join in, or not correct the students but respond with a smile or sheepish grin. This is happening daily at Longview Highschool. When a principal joins in on the disrespectful talk or treatment of a teacher it hurts us all professionally, as well as encourages this type of behavior from students. It sends a message to students that it's okay to talk disrespectfully about or to a teacher.
This issue make me wonder how these principals attained this position in the first place. Where they taken out of the classroom and placed in this position due to problems with regard to their teaching abilities. If so why were they given a step up and rewarded with more pay and authority over teachers who are actually doing a great job. There is no reason for the behavior or abuse of their authority.
My thoughts go immediately to several other positions within LISD. The main principal on campus who had to make the recommendation of putting these people in that position on his campus and the administrators , who hired this individual in the first place and decided it was easier to keep them on payroll than to let them go based on poor performance. This is a vicious cycle LISD has entered into and it has been ongoing for quite sometime. We need to clean house! We need to start at the top and go all the wayvto the bottom and remove the dead weight. I'm amazed at the things people are allowed to do and say to one another as long as it's coming from the top and rolling down. If this were to go in the reverse we would have massive firing of teachers. As it is, qualified individuals are hard to come by in our district because qualified individuals don't want to put up with the mess here in LISD. So what we have left are many unqualified principals, and teachers hanging on and hanging out for a pay check. We do still have a few dedicated teachers striving to do their best, but it's hard to fight when the few are out numbered by the many. Pray for change, otherwise the future of our youth here in Longview is not very bright
Please share with the community and help fight for our district to correct these issues in order to make LISD a better place to work and a great place for an education. Thank you teachers and staff for allowing me to help you.
Thank You,
Jason Bates
