We are having a problem with the cell phone issues here at LHS. Students seem to think it's their right to use them during class for whatever and whenever they would like. Administration is never consistent with any of the rules outlined in the student handbook, making the teacher the bad guy when calling a student down for use of cell phones during class. By use of cell phones I mean texting during class, snapchat, taking pictures of the other students and at times faculty and other students who are special education, ( an illegal act ,the ADA could have a hay day if they found out about this and charges could be filed not only against the district but the individual or his or her parents if they are a minor ),music so loud that the teacher can hear the words in the song (which by the way usually is demeaning to women). Having said this I would like to remind the powers that be that teachers also have a right to not be photographed at random and place on social media depicting them (photo shopped) doing unspeakable things. The cell phone has become educations nemesis. Students who have no intention of learning turn to it for entertainment purposes because they just don't care about their grades. Then the teacher is held responsible by the parent and the district for the student failing. One student with a cell phone in a class of 30 can disrupt the education of so many students. The teacher then has to stop teaching convince the student that it's against policy to use it during class time. The student takes up more time and attention by arguing with the teacher, speaking disrespectfully to the teacher and storming out of class because they didn't get their way. Teachers should be held to a standard, I whole heartedly agree. Shouldn't we hold our students be held to a standard? Gone are the days of pass or fail, we have turned tide and are condoning the intent to not receive an education, by doing this we are making it acceptable for these students to interrupt everyone else's education. Don't think this only happens in regular classes, many AP classes are affected by this as well. It's time for administration from the top down to expect more from students regardless of their race or background. If not this only perpetuates the behavior and when students become adults they have no education, no respect for authority and constantly blame the system. Well the system is failing them. Let's overhaul the system
