In the Longview News Journal article published Tuesday a gentleman submitted this comment. I responded to hopefully answer the questions he doesn't understand : I have a child that is a senior at the high school. I'm hard pressed to see how Wilcox working 20 or 40 hours a week would have any effect on a random kid bringing a gun to school. Seeing as how he's not on the campus, checking every kid as they walk on grounds. My child has never suffered any lack of education in the time at LISD. Just as people who bash other careers, if you don't like the way it's operated, please, run for the post yourself. I'm sure the school board salary will make you a millionaire. My response to his comments : I am glad your child has gotten a good education at an LISD school, but if you do some research you will find that there are more children that go to LISD school's than you own child. Where one student may be getting a good education there are many who are not. If you look at the schools report cards on the TEA website you will see that the education of our students is failing. How can you explain to me the hundreds of emails I have received from LISD teachers begging me to help? As of today I have received 167 emails all from teachers. So your saying this isn't an issue? That there is no problem with our school's administration? You are not part of the hundreds of tax payers who have a problem. Dr. Wilcox has done nothing to further our children's education or out teachers well being. They should be making constant improvements each year on the educational side but the facts don't lie we continue to drop each year in our report card of the district. So you can either back a 20 hour a week superintendent who makes a total of 263 thousand dollars a year combined with his retirement and salary, or you can stand with the people of the majority. As for changes in the school board we do need new people to run, but it is hard for the average 40 hour a week person who has kids and drives them all over longview to even have a chance. I would love to run for the school board, but it would not be fair to the children or teacher's that I couldn't give them enough of my time due to my work schedule and driving my kids all over town, But there is someone out there who has that time and will listen to the community, they just have to be found. The issue about the gun at LHS, was not that it wasn't found by security, but that the LISD did not inform the parents that this had happened. We don't expect him to search every student, but we do expect him to communicate with parents of the school to inform them of the situation, which was not done. My advice to you is to do research and see the facts for what they are, or since your child is almost out of school ignore them. It's your choice. As for me who has 3 children in the district I care about their education and their teacher's As we all know there will be people out there that just don't agree. But from what I have seen they are few and far between. Do not let those individuals divert you from the issue at hand.
