STOP THE VILLAGE 605 FREEWAY PYLON SIGN

SPEAK UP and tell the City of Los Alamitos, Lincoln Property Company (the developer), and the tenants of the Village 605 retail development (including 365 by Whole Foods, Blaze Pizza, See's Candy, Del Taco and Starbucks) that our community is OPPOSED to the DOMINANT FREEWAY PYLON SIGN will loom over our neighborhood and Oak Middle School, increase traffic on Katella and adversely affect property values.

The Village 605 project is a 113,880 square foot retail development located on Katella and Oak, next to Los Alamitos Civic Center.  The main purpose of the freeway pylon sign (which will be illuminated, 90 foot high, 2,000 square feet face) is to attract potential consumers traveling on the 605 freeway day and night.

The developer's own website - www.village605.com - touts the development as follows: "Village 605's premier freeway orientation, high average household incomes, huge traffic volumes and dominant freeway pylon signage will provide an unparalleled destination that will cater to the cities of Los Alamitos, Rossmoor, Cypress, Long Beach and Cerritos."  If the developer truly planned to cater to the "affluent community" it hopes will patronize its retail center, there is no reason for a DOMINANT freeway pylon sign to drive transient traffic into our community.  It does not serve the needs of the community.

The freeway pylon sign will push new traffic off the 605 freeway, onto Katella (which is already congested) and into our community 24 hours a day (the project includes permits for two 24-hour drive thru restaurants and the plans indicate Del Taco will be a tenant).  The developer and tenants seek to profit from transient traffic generated by the freeway pylon sign at the expense of the people who live, work and go to school in the community.

The developer plans to remove the mature Eucalyptus trees along Katella.  Once the trees are removed, there will be no buffer between the homes in Rossmoor and the freeway pylon sign.  The freeway pylon sign will be visible from the north end of Rossmoor. It will undoubtedly adversely affect property values in the surrounding community.  The illuminated freeway pylon sign cheapens the community.  The Rossmoor Homeowners Association issued a letter to the City of Los Alamitos expressing its opposition to the sign (amongst other aspects of the project) on January 24, 2017 (a copy of the RHA letter can be found at Rossmoor-RHA.org).

The freeway pylon sign will be visible from Oak Middle School and will be looming over the athletic field which is used not only for school purposes, but for after-school community sports (soccer, basketball, lacrosse, etc.)  The freeway pylon sign does not promote an educational environment conducive to wellness and learning and will be an eye-sore, to say the least.  Moreover, the sign will cast shadows on the Oak athletic field which was recently refurbished. The Los Alamitos Council of PTAs passed a Resolution in opposition to the freeway pylon sign on January 23, 2017.  At a public meeting on February 21, 2017, the Los Alamitos Unified School District School Board indicated in intends to support the PTA Resolution and intends to send a letter to the City regarding the sign as well.

The DOMINANT (to use the developer's own words) freeway pylon sign is not necessary to the development. The approved development plans include signage along Katella (similar to the signage along Los Alamitos Blvd. for the Shops at Rossmoor and the signage for the Old Ranch Town Center). This signage is reasonable and expected and will sufficiently advertise to the community.

Please consider signing this Petition to let the City of Los Alamitos, Lincoln Property Company and the tenants that they are alienating the very community they hope will patronize the retail businesses by forcing the freeway pylon sign on us.  Lincoln Property Company and tenants (including Whole Foods 365, Starbucks, See's Candy, Del Taco and Blaze Pizza), please be good neighbors and agree to NO freeway pylon sign.
